How to Host a Whimsical Practical Magic 2 Watch Party

If there was ever a movie made for a themed watch party, it’s Practical Magic. Between the midnight margaritas, witchy outfits, and cozy, nostalgic vibes, there’s almost too much inspiration to work with. And now that Practical Magic 2 is bringing us back into the world of the Owens sisters, it’s the perfect excuse to make a whole night out of it.
Whether you’re planning to watch with a couple of friends or having a full-on Practical Magic party, the theme can be as elaborate or chill as you want. Mix up some margaritas, light a bunch of candles, get some Stevie Nicks goin’ on the speakers, and voilà! You’ve got a witchy night to start the spooky, cozy fall season off right.
From themed snacks and drinks to decorations, activities and those little details true fans will recognize, here are some fun ideas for throwing a Practical Magic 2 watch party — which comes out on September 10, 2026, by the way.
Witchy Invitations

Set the tone for your Practical Magic 2 viewing before anyone arrives with invitations that feel like they could have come from the Owens house. Consider designs with pressed flowers, moons, stars, botanical drawings, handwritten fonts, and pretty paper. Avoid anything you'd see at a typical Halloween party (there's a time and place for that, namely October 31st). A digital invitation works perfectly, but an actual paper invite sealed with wax (like Sally’s letter to Gillian in the first film) would absolutely take it to the next level.
The wording can reference the movie without requiring everyone to be a die-hard fan: invite everyone over for an evening of midnight margaritas, sisterhood, and, of course, some practical magic. Include the dress code, whether guests should bring anything, and whether the plan involves seeing the sequel in theaters first.

One of the easiest ways to make your Practical Magic 2 watch party feel themed without asking everyone to wear an actual costume is going for an Owens-inspired dress code. The original movie's style is that stunning '90s decade witchy, with long skirts, slip dresses, cardigans, boots, lace, velvet, florals, and layers.
Tell guests to interpret it however they want. Someone can channel Gillian with something dramatic and romantic, go softer and more cozy like Sally, or embrace Aunt Jet and Aunt Frances with tons of costume jewelry and funky hats. A dress code will also make the group pics look cohesive without everyone showing up in identical pointy hats (though, you can totally encourage that, too, if that’s the vibe you’re after).

When getting your space ready, don’t feel like you need to go full-blown Halloween. Try channeling the vibe of their gorgeous old house. Dim the overhead lights and bring in lamps and taper or flameless candles. And feel free to use what you have lying around, like stacks of books and candle holders. Lace, dark floral arrangements, herbs like rosemary and lavender, and little amber bottles or glass jars will work wonderfully, too.
If the watch party is happening in fall, branches, apples, pears, and dried leaves can fill out the space inexpensively. The best part is that nothing needs to match. In fact, slightly mismatched is better. The Owens house looks collected over generations, so thrifted and borrowed decor arguably works better than buying an entire coordinated party set.
Midnight Margaritas

Obviously, midnight margaritas are non-negotiable. They’re probably the most famous food-or-drink moment from the original movie, and they've continued to be used in promotion surrounding the release of Practical Magic 2.
Make a big pitcher so nobody has to spend the movie squeezing limes (or hire a bartender if you really want to make a thing of it). A classic version with tequila, lime juice and orange liqueur is perfect, but set out a zero-proof pitcher as well so everyone can participate. Just make sure to label them so they don’t get mixed up.
And despite the name, there's absolutely no reason to wait until midnight. Serve the first round when everyone arrives. Put on some music, specifically "Coconut" by Harry Nilsson, the song they danced to in the original, and consider the pre-movie margarita hour part of the entertainment.
Rustic Food Table

Instead of covering the table in witch hats and plastic spiders, make the food display look inspired by an old herbalist's kitchen. Transfer snacks into glass bowls, jars, wooden boards and mismatched vintage dishes, and don’t hesitate to scatter fresh herbs around the table for ambiance. Seriously, some sprigs of rosemary, sage, thyme and lavender will make your table look all the more atmospheric. The overall effect should feel abundant, rustic, and witchy.
If you’re planning something bigger, consider hiring a caterer or hosting a potluck instead. It can help a heck of a lot if food is one less thing you have to think about. Consider ideas like blackberry pie, rosemary focaccia, apple cider doughnuts, mushroom tartlets, pumpkin bread, herb-infused dips, dark chocolate, and cinnamon cookies.
Scavenger Hunt

Before everyone arrives, hide a handful of Practical Magic-inspired objects around the house and give guests a list of clues to work through before the movie starts. The two must-haves are a little toy frog and a ring (a nod to the whole freaky Jimmy situation, of course).
From there, add a few easier finds like a bottle labelled “belladonna," a spell book, a lime for the midnight margaritas, or a tiny bottle of tequila. And they don’t need to be exact movie props, either. Random things from around the house can easily become part of the game!
Have everyone hunt individually or split into teams, with a small witchy prize for whoever finds everything first. For an extra challenge, write the clues as little rhymes or riddles instead of simply listing what everyone needs to find.
Cast Spells

What’s a Practical Magic 2 watch party without casting a spell or two? Before the movie, give everyone paper and pens and borrow the basic idea behind Sally's childhood impossible love spell. Rather than making it exclusively about romantic partners, let everyone write an intentionally ridiculous list of qualities for whatever they're calling into their lives. It could be a future love, friendship, dream apartment, job, or next chapter.
You could also make little spell bottles, too. Set out some tiny corked bottles or jars alongside dried lavender, rosemary, bay leaves, chamomile, salt, cinnamon sticks, and small pieces of ribbon. Guests can fill a bottle while choosing an intention for it, like love, courage, creativity, protection, adventure, whatever feels right.
There's no need to pretend everyone is performing an authentic ritual (unless that's your thing). Feel free to treat it as a playful, symbolic craft inspired by the movie's world. Add little tags so everyone can write what their bottle represents. By the end of the night, each guest has a personalized party favor that’ll look pretty sitting on a shelf (or altar).

A good witchy playlist should start before the movie does. The original film has a particularly strong musical identity, so use its soundtrack as the jumping-off point and expand outward into dreamy, feminine, witchy rock and folk.
Stevie Nicks is the obvious cornerstone. From there, mix in artists with a similarly mystical or romantic feeling, like Fleetwood Mac, Florence and the Machine, Mazzy Star, The Cranberries, Fiona Apple, Kate Bush, and whatever else suits the group.

Rather than buying a printed movie backdrop, create a little corner that looks like it belongs inside the world of the films.
Hang dark fabric or floral curtains and add candles, flowers, old books, a vintage mirror, tarot cards, glass bottles and a broom. If there's an antique chair somewhere in the house, drag that over too. A tripod or phone stand lets everyone take photos without appointing one unfortunate guest official photographer. Alternatively, you could rent a photo booth and make it a bigger part of the night, if you’re planning a more elaborate party.
Watch the Original First

For anyone planning a full event around the sequel, make the original part of the festivities. It doesn't necessarily need to happen the same night. You could host the original a week earlier, organize a double-feature once the sequel is available at home, or have everyone watch it independently before meeting up. For a theatrical outing, watching the 1998 movie at home before heading to the cinema for Practical Magic 2 would make a great pregame — especially with margaritas and snacks.

A bundle of dried lavender tied with ribbon is inexpensive and beautiful. Other easy options include a little jar of bath salts, an herb plant, a crystal, or the spell bottles guests made earlier.
